Beschreibung: Die Familie Mehlhop kommt aus dem nordwesten Deutschlands.
Der Name ist eine Ortsbeschreibung. Me(h)l würde in heutigem Deutsch
"Moor" heißen und "Hop" wäre "Hügel".
Um den Herkunftsort grob zu charakterisieren, befindet sich in nordwestlicher
Postion ein Vergißmeinnicht (Myosotis palustris, eine typische Sumpfpflanze)
im Schild. Der sogenannte Dreiberg symbolisiert Hügel. Ein weiteres
Indiz für eine Moorlandschaft ist die Wellenleiste. Mein Zweig der
Famile lebt schon sein mehreren Generationen in Oldenburg bzw. im Oldenburger
Raum. Die verwendeten Farben Rot und Gold sowie die blaue Wellenleiste
in Rot sind die Farben der Stadt Oldenburg und bzw. des ehemaligen Großherzogtums.
Das Thema des Dreiberges mit der Wellenleiste wiederholt sich im Hut. Das
Design des Wappens wurde Dr. Gerd Ulrich Krischke anno 1990 gemacht.
Auch ist schon der Name als Meelhop aufgetreten, laut dem Bürgerbuch der Stadt Oldenburg wurde im Jahre 1692 ein Schiffer namens Henrich Meehlhop neuer Bürger der Stadt. Allerdings ist es mir nicht gelungen eine Verwandtschaft mit meinem Zweig der Familie zu beweisen.
Heute findet man ca. 60 Einträge des Namens Mehlhop in den deutschen Telefonbüchern und gut 50 in denen der USA.

Description: the Mehlhop Familie is
originally from the north west of Germany. The name refers to a place:
Me(h)l would be "Moor" (= swamp) in today's German and "Hop"
would be Hügel (= hill). To characterize the place roughly, there
is in the nort west of the shield a Forgetmenot (Myosotis palustris, a
flower that typically grows in swamp). The tree mountains stand for hills
and a further sign for swamp is the water line. My branch of the family
lives in Oldenburg (Oldenburg county) for several generations. Red and
gold are the colours of Oldenburg and blue in red are the colours of the
former Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. The theme with the waterline and three
mountains are repeated in the hat. The design of the crest was made by
Dr. Gerd Ulrich Krischke in 1990.
Also the name appeared as "Meehlhop", according to the "Bürgerbuch" of the city of Oldenburg (lists new citizens and house property of the citizens), a man named Henrich Mehlhop became a new citizen. But so far I could not prove that he is related with our branch of the family.
Today there're about 60 entries for the name Mehlhop in the German telephone directories and a bit more than 50 in the USA.
